How to get a passive income

October 12, 2023 by Admin

Passive income sounds marvellous, doesn’t it?

Especially if you make your living as a freelancer and you are limited by having just the one brain, one set of eyes, one pair of hands and a finite number of hours in the day. It is limiting.

I mean, I make a great living reading corporate reports, but I do that working about 20 hours per week over the year, on average (apart from during the annual report season when I often work 50-60 hours per week). The neck ache is rubbish, and by the end of April my eyes hurt and reading makes me nauseous.

At that point I avoid reading anything detailed for a while and I ‘try’ to factor in blocks of time where I don’t take any work.

Those are the times I allow myself a bit of creativity

I write stuff, and I live with an artist who just can’t help being creative.
Said artist, Paddy Hamilton of Dungeness Open Studios, is the creator of the Dungeness Font, which celebrates the full-caps fishermens’ script on ‘for sale’ boards here on Dungeness beach.

Dungeness, for those who don’t know, is like the wild-west transplanted to the south-east coast of the UK. It’s a nature reserve on a shingle headland. There are two lighthouses, railway carriages converted into dwellings (I live in one), a small-gauge railway, and a couple of decommisioned nuclear power stations. Ed Sheeran owns a house a few doors up (nope, I’ve never seen the fellow). And we have the much-loved Dungeness Snack Shack, serving fresh fish from the working boats here. It’s an ecelectic mix, and attracts an eclectic mix of visitors.

Anyway, back to the FONT. Paddy carved individual linocuts of all the letters of the alphabet, numbers, puntuation symbols, and some skull and crossbones for good measure. It took about eight months, people. Eight months of chiselling linoleum, making sure the kerning was correct and then printing the blocks. It’s a true labour of love. A clever collaborator then created a digital drag ‘n’ drop version, which is available as a download on a Creative Commons licence.

So here, in the Dungeness Font, our worlds merge, as words become art. There are even rules of three in the way it should be displayed. Rules!

How does this make a passive income?

This summer, I had an idea about how to use it.  And how to get a passive income.

Print on demand!

Dungeness Studio Four was born and people seem to like it. So, I am now a corporate report proofreader and t-shirt designer, with a passive income. Because, why not? Talk to me about either!

We sell to the UK, Europe and the US. View the full collection here:
